EU AI Act Article 53: GPAI Provider Obligations Explained

The EU AI Act's Article 53 requires GPAI providers to submit technical documentation and cooperate with authorities before August 2026. This applies to providers of general-purpose AI models placed on the EU market, including foundation models and multimodal models. Providers must prepare and maintain up-to-date technical documentation, including model architecture, data sources, and testing procedures. They must also provide a sufficiently detailed summary of copyrighted material used for training. This is a new set of obligations for GPAI providers, separate from Articles 9-15 which apply to high-risk AI systems.
