The Boss in the Code
A study found that algorithms used in gig economy platforms systematically disadvantage workers with care responsibilities, such as mothers. This is due to the algorithms' inability to see or account for these responsibilities, leading to lower acceptance rates and priority scores. The study, based on ethnographic fieldwork in Indonesia, suggests that this is a structural issue, not a result of bias. The findings have implications for the gig economy and highlight the need for more transparency and accountability in algorithmic management. Gig workers, especially women, need to be aware of these issues and advocate for change.
