S4 is an S3-compatible storage gateway that compresses objects before writing them to a backend bucket. While it's an impressive piece of work, it adds operational complexity and latency. An alternative solution, Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, already provides similar storage savings without the added complexity. Consider using FSx for ONTAP for production workloads.
